Bill Gates "partisan" to meet Skype? Carriers bypassing Microsoft Microsoft acquisition of Skype may have proved controversial with large sums involved – $ 8.5 billion in cash, no less – but according to Bill Gates, it's not just "a good deal for Microsoft" but something he personally has been pushing for. "I was a staunch supporter at the board level for the transaction is [...]

NAT Traversal Is Holding Back VoIP and IP Communications adoption?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is becoming an integral part consumer and business markets. Multimedia communications, high quality with rich presence, mobility and universal availability, and lower cost are some of the benefits VoIP brings to end users. For operators, it promises new revenues from new and converged services, service bundling, customer retention, and less capital and operating expenditures by construction and operation of a single IP network for all communications services.
The increased penetration of broadband Internet, the main driving force behind VoIP adoption, is also one of the biggest challenges – VoIP calls do not work well in situations with high throughput for multiple firewalls and NATs break VoIP.
To answer my concerns about NAT Traversal and the future of VoIP, I was CTO Eyeball Networks, a provider of software for VoIP, messaging Instant video and telephony, to answer some questions.
What is NAT and why should I be concerned about the NAT traversal?
Over 90 percent of computers or Internet access to broadband devices utilizing private IP addresses. These addresses Obtain private IP mapped real Internet addresses using a mechanism called Network Address Translation (NAT), which is implemented in all access devices, broadband (also called broadband routers such as Linksys, Netgear or SMC) and sometimes also in the provider network service.
NAT crossing refers to the problem and the solution thereof, where two computers behind NATs sometimes fail to communicate together with other functions such as instant messaging, VoIP, file sharing and online games. If you are building devices, applications or services involving Internet communications, then NAT traversal should be a concern.
What applications NAT traversal technology is used?
A list of applications that require NAT traversal technologies:
• VoIP and video telephony
• The sharing of files such as photos video sharing and
• Games Online
• Collaboration tools such as presentation and white-boarding
• Any other applications using the client to client data transfer
How the availability of effective solutions changed the way NAT traversal of VoIP and other IP-based services are delivered and used?
NAT route was traditionally one of the major obstacles to widespread adoption VoIP. Development of IETF standards such as STUN, TURN and ICE provide a rich set of mechanisms for interoperability and standards-based solution evolutionary problem. Availability of a NAT traversal solution as effective Eyeball AnyFirewall engine removed this obstacle to provide crossing security of VoIP calls through NATs, firewalls and Web proxies. It is actually used VoIP and other IP-based services with plug and play standard between devices, applications and service providers.
What are some of the challenges traditionally faced by developers of client networking applications and client, particularly in peer-to-peer and VoIP settings?
Traditionally, developers do not have appropriate tools and technologies to solve the problem of NAT Traversal for network applications client to client. For example, for VoIP applications developers / operators face the following questions.
Some products implemented only partially NAT traversal solution. For example, many VoIP phones only support STUN, and can therefore not be used for the client to client data transfer by most Internet users to broadband.
In most cases, operators installed to use a relay server (such as Session Border Controller) for all calls. Since all calls are transferred, the relay server becomes a bottleneck (and expensive) services for scalability, and deteriorates the quality of calls by injecting additional delay, jitter and packet loss. In addition, since the implementation of SBC proprietary protocols provider products do not work with those another supplier.
In some cases, developers have developed proprietary solutions NAT traversal (like Skype) that are not compatible with others.
What types of features and capabilities of the VoIP industry is looking for a NAT traversal solution?
Here is a list if the characteristics and capabilities of the VoIP industry is looking for:
• Course 100 percent of VoIP calls through NATs, firewalls and Web proxies.
• A solution based on the standard of interoperability third party (IETF STUN, TURN and ICE).
• Works without changing NATs, firewalls and other infrastructure.
• Most calls should be peer-to-peer networks for improved quality Media and scalability.
• Complete solution with handset / client and server components.
• Compact size for point final solution with the support of many PC and embedded platforms.
• Mature and proven technology in the field.
• The bottom line is that when a user buys a VoIP phone or service, it should work in all cases without scalability bottlenecks service.
What AnyFirewall technology and how it is used by companies in the VoIP industry?
The award-winning AnyFirewall Engine ™ is the industry leader NAT traversal SDK (SDK) for guaranteed VoIP call routing and video through NATs, firewalls, and Web proxies. AFE incorporates the most – the full implementation of IETF standards STUN, TURN and ICE. Eyeball's patented AnyFirewall ™ Technology offers – for the first time in the industry with a completely software solution that is standards-based (ie STUN, TURN, ICE) and primarily peer-to-peer resulting in 100% VoIP and video call completion. Our customers are integrating this technology into mobile software video phones, set-top boxes, and PDA-based mobile phones.
Why use STUN, TURN and ICE technology for crossing NAT?
STUN, TURN and ICE are the results of the IETF standards body International is responsible for developing all protocols related Internet. Together they provide an excellent method for NAT traversal which is being standardized to ensure interoperability between products and services from different providers. Early efforts on NAT traversal solutions such as application level gateways (ALG) and controllers Session Border (SBC) are either not effective enough or had problems with interoperability, performance and scalability. STUN TURN and ICE have received support from the general industry suppliers such as Cisco, Microsoft and Nokia, and has been adopted for CableLabs IMS specification for next generation communications architecture. Eyeball AnyFirewall Engine offers the most comprehensive implementation of STUN, TURN and ICE and the features such as UPnP and HTTP-tunnel.
In a nutshell, I found that the NAT devices and firewalls are major obstacles to widespread the adoption of VoIP, and the IETF working STUN, TURN, ICE and provide an excellent method to solve this problem. However, the implementation of these methods requires considerable insight and experience. Eyeball Networks has invested over many years developing its technology AnyFirewall, implementation more complete STUN TURN and ICE, to enable service providers and device manufacturers to ensure software firewall and NAT traversal 100% communications IP. If VoIP providers and equipment manufacturers benefit from this technology NAT Traversal AnyFirewall no longer be a concern, and IP communications will someday surpass the use of traditional phone lines.
