An ATA is a device similar to that of your ADSL modem, except it’s only use is for VOIP – it can’t connect to the internet on its own.

An ATA connects to your existing ADSL modem via Ethernet cable.

VOIP (Voice Over IP) is a service that runs off your ADSL Broadband. You can connect any standard telephone device (even cordless) to an ATA, where the ATA would have settings that can be supplied by your ISP.

Depending on the current equipment you already have, you may not need an additional ATA device, as many modems/routers come with ATA’s built-in.

The easiest way to tell is to look underneath your modem and check the model of it. If you have a ‘V’ in the model name, it most likely is a VOIP capable device.

Other letters in the model name can mean the following
‘G’ means wireless G
‘N’ means wireless N
‘M’ means Annex M capable (don’t worry about this one)

and sometimes letters in the model name don’t mean anything, but if you call up your ISP’s sales department they’d be more than happy to find out whether your device is VOIP capable.
