What’s the real story with “unlocked” GSM cell phones?

My girlfriend really wants an LG “Chocolate” cell phone, but we both have AT&T, and these phones are for Verizon. I found an “unlocked” “GSM” one online that takes a SIM card, but I’m scared to even try it with all the confusing technical advice over unlocked phones. I spoke with AT&T customer service and they say some of the features won’t work. Are they just steering me away from merchandise that’s not AT&T? PLEASE HELP!! p.s. I’m not that technologically savvy, so lamen’s terms please! THANKS!!

The phone you found online is the KG800, which is also known as the GSM version of the Chocolate. It is a tri-band phone with the three bands being 900/1800/1900. The bands used in the US are 850/1900. It is true that some features may not work, especially when using a European model of a phone in the US. It will depend on whether or not they can get the settings to take on the phone, and if they aren’t able to do it over the air, then you will need to be able to enter the settings manually. If you are not able to edit the settings manually, then you will be out of luck when it comes to that particular feature. It’s not necessarily them trying to get you to buy an AT&T phone. Since it only supports one of the two frequency bands used in the US, you may have spotty service when using it in the US. When buying an unlocked GSM phone, you want to make sure that it has at least the 850/1900 bands to get the best possible performance in the US. Unlocked doesn’t mean it will work on all frequency bands, just that it will work with sim cards from a compatible provider.
