Flanagan’s, a New Jersey irrigation system installation company, ordered an irrigation pump from another New Jersey corporation, Aquarius, and paid a $3,500 down payment for the product. Watertronics, a Wisconsin corporation, manufactured the pump. Flanagan’s had no direct contact with Watertronics other than a four-minute telephone conversation in which Flanagan’s unsuccessfully attempted to get a better price on a pump. After receiving and installing the pump, Flanagan’s was unhappy with its performance, so the company refused to pay the $34,000 balance due on the pump. Watertronics sued Flanagan’s in Wisconsin state court. Flanagan’s argued that the court could not exercise in personam jurisdiction over it.
