how do prepaid cell phones work?

I was wondering exactly how these work.. do they have to be added to a current cell phone plan? are they kind of like disposable cameras where you use them and throw out?

You can buy prepaid phones in pretty much any store, and, if you want, you could dispose of it if you felt like you didn’t need it anymore. To put minutes, texting, data, etc. on a prepaid phone, you buy cards. The cards can have anything from 100 minutes calling to unlimited for a month, but that is, of course, very pricey. You don’t need a cell plan in order to use them.
