How does the telecommunicating system work in US?
I am planning to study abroad in US. I plan to purchase a phone, but i do not know what to look out for with all the telephone plans and company? Please explain to me the system. In my country, people use sim cards.
In the United States there are 2 services.
AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM (with sim cards)
Verizon and Sprint use CDMA (without sim cards)
If you have a phone capable of using the US 850MHZ band… i.e. a “world phone” you can probably get a AT&T SIM and use that phone in the US. You may also be able to use your current SIM… but be aware that the international cost may be very high.
Another option is to pick up a pre paid phone once you arrive. They are usually fairly low cost (right now at att.com you can get one for $9.99 US). You can also pick one up for $30-$40 US in many department stores (i.e. Target, Walmart, etc)
Your per minute charges will be higher with a pre paid phone, but anyone can get one.
If you have a US Credit Card, you may be able to sign up for a year long contract to get less expensive service and a free or low cost phone. (if you plan to be in the US a year or longer and are willing to sign a contract). But you may have problems qualifying if you have no credit history in the US.
If your current phone is an advanced one that will work in the US (850 Mhz for AT&T) you can also purchase a SIM chip from an AT&T Store (or purchase an AT&T pre paid phone from anywhere and just swap the SIM chip into your phone) (Or T-Mobile, but I am not sure what the T-Mobile MHZ is)
You may also want to consider just walking into an AT&T or Verizon (etc) store once you arrive, and asking what is least expensive.
Good luck, and best wishes for a fun time in the United States.
