How much data does google maps for android phones need per hour/ mile etc.?

I dont have an unlimited internet contract on my HTC Legend phone, and Google maps Android downloads the maps as you travel doesnt it? so I wondered how much data i will pay to be downloading as I use it. Per hour/ mile etc whatever is a good measurement.
