The power mat plugs into the wall to get power in the first place. Inside the power mat, there is a coil that is energized, just like the primary coil in a transformer. Sitting on the mat is another coil that acts as the secondary coil in a transformer. It is inside a plastic disk and gets plugged into the side of your phone where you would normally plug in the charger. If your phone happens to have a built in coil designed to work with the power mat, then you don’t need this extra gadget, it’s just built in to the phone. But you are carrying around the weight all day. It’s a bit like carrying half of your charger with you to avoid plugging it in at the end of the day. The power is transferred inductively from the primary coil to the secondary coil “wirelessly”. Expect there are wires all over the place. LOL. It will be cool if they get a good standard and all devices include compatible hardware so you don’t have to plug your phone in to charge it. But for now, most phones don’t have this yet.
