How does a cell phone without a contract work?

I just want the general summary about the workings of no contract phones…I saw these smart phones at Walmart that could come without a contract, the only catch was that the price of the phone was higher. Can I sign a contract with another telephone company (At&t, Cricket) with a phone from, let’s say, T-mobile?

A phone without a contract just means you are not obligated to anything.
You can cancel your service at any time and you are not stuck for 2 years.
If you have a contract and then decide to cancel you then have to pay an early termination fee which can range from $175 to $350 depending on your carrier and what type of phone you have.

As for signing a contract with another carrier and using T-mobile wouldn’t work because you sign a contract with the carrier you are with.
