Can I get out of my cell phone contract if I no longer have a job?

I have an iphone 3Gs contract with AT&T. However, I can no longer afford the monthly payments because I don’t have a job. I want to get out of the contract, but don’t want to get stuck with the $175 Early Termination Fee. Is being jobless a good enough reason to get out?

If it is not, does anyone know if there have been any recent materially adverse changes in AT&T’s service contract for iPhone 3Gs?

They make you pay 200 dollars to cancel any contract. No matter the reason. Even if your dead, the phone company harasses your family for the money.
