what is the difference between quad band cell phone and 3G?

I am planing to get this fone quad band cell phone from ebay and when I talked to my fone customer service ppl they said it has to be a 3G fone then I can use it with them
so now I dnt know what is the difference between a quad band and a 3G phone.?

Quad band refwrs to the GSM frequencies the phone can access. 3g is the type of data network the carrier has.
